The word “Ramadhan” رمضان is a form of mashdar (infinitive) derived from the basics of ramidha-yarmadhu رمض يرمض which initially means burning, stinging or scorching, or very hot. It named it as such because when it is designated as a fasting month, the air or the weather in the Arabian Peninsula is so hot that it can burn something dry.

In addition, Ramadhan also means ‘sharpening’ because the Jahiliyans in that month honed war tools (swords, machetes, etc.) to face the war the following month. Thus, Ramadan can be interpreted as the month to ‘sharpen’ the soul, ‘sharpen’ the sharpness of mind and clarity of the heart, so as to ‘burn’ the disgraceful traits and the ‘sin fat’ that are within us.

The Ramadhan which we take every year is very important from the perspective of other names attributed to him. The scholars labeled a number of names in Ramadan:

 

First:
Month of Qur’an (the month of the Qur’an), because in this month the Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad SAW. In addition, other holy scriptures: Zabur, Torah, and the Gospel were also revealed in the same month.

 

Second:
Syahr al-Siyam (fasting month), because only Ramadan is the month in which Muslims are obliged to fast for a full month. And only Ramadan, the only, the name of the month mentioned in the Qur’an. (QS al-Baqarah [2]: 185).

 

Third:
Syahr al-Tilawah (the month of the Qur’an reading), because in this month Jibril AS met the Prophet to perform tadarus Alquran with the Prophet from the beginning to the end.

 

Fourth:
Syahr al-Rahmah (the full month is a blessing from Allah SWT), because Allah sends down various blessings which are not found outside Ramadan. The doors of goodness that go to heaven are wide open.

 

Fifth:
Syahr al-Najat (the month of liberation from the punishment of hell). Allah promises forgiveness of sins and redeeming himself from the punishment of hell fire for those who fast for faith and merely looking forward to His redemption.

 

The sixth:
Syahr al-‘Id (month ending with the feast). Ramadhan is celebrated with joy and ends with a happy Eid al-Fitr celebration, including poor people

 

Seventh:
Syahr al-Judd (philanthropic month), because this month Muslims are encouraged to give alms, especially to alleviate the burden of poor and poor. The Prophet (pbuh) gave the best examples of the most generous people in the holy month.

 

Eighth:
Syahr al-Shabr (month of patience), because fasting trains someone to behave and behave patiently, be energetic, and hold the test.

 

Ninth:
Syahr Allah (the month of Allah), because in it Allah multiplies the reward for the fasting person.

So, Ramadan is a very meaningful month.
