With the change in the era, people, technology and atmosphere things present at the early ages are extinct now but the great wonder of all time is the well of Rummat which has flowing water from past 1400 years ago.
What is the well of Rummat?
Well of Rummat is also known as the Uthman Bin Affan well located in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. It is one of the wells among many wells in Madinah and however the only well with flowing sweet water in it.
Does it irrigate the surrounding?
The well is used to water:
A Mosque.
Large farm housing palm trees.
The number of plants and flowers that benefit from it.
Why it is called Uthman Bin Affan (رضي الله عنه) well?
It is named as so because Uthman Bin Affan (رضي الله عنه) bought this well from a jew and let people have water from it.
Who is Uthman Bin Affan?
Uthman (رضي الله عنه) was the third Caliph of the Islamic history and the companion of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) . He migrated to Madinah in 622 along with his wife and other Muslims. He was the richest merchant of his time.
Why it was called Rummat well?
1400 years ago this well was the only source of drinking water for the people of Madinah. This well was owned by a Jew, Rummat Al Giffari who charge high cost if anyone wants to fetch water from the well.
What did Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) Announce for water crises?
When Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to know about the incident He announced whoever buys the well from the Jew and set it free for all the inhabitants will be rewarded by Allah ten times for helping people.
What was Uthman’s (رضي الله عنه) wise step?
Uthman Bin Affan (رضي الله عنه) on listening to the announcement went to the Jew and asked him to trade for the well. The jew refused to sell him his well. Uthman being a merchant played wise and asked him to sell half of his well to which he agreed.
Why the Agreement caused Jew loss?
Uthman Bin Affan (رضي الله عنه) agreed with the Jew that they will have alternative days for fetching water from the well. On the days when Uthman (رضي الله عنه) had the well, he set it free for all the people to fetch water, as a result, people use to take two-days water from the well and won’t come on the other days when Jew have the well, who use to charge them for fetching.
What final amount Jew agreed to sell his well?
Seeing the condition where he has all loss and no profit as people prefer fetching water for free, Rummat sold another half of well to Uthman Bin Affan (رضي الله عنه) for 20,000 Dirhams. A total of 38,000 Dirhams, silver coins were given to Jew for the whole well.
Why Uthman (رضي الله عنه) rejected to sell his well?
During Famine times, in later years a companion of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to Uthman Bin Affan (رضي الله عنه) and asked him to sell his well to him for a very large amount. Uthman (رضي الله عنه) said that no amount can compare to the amount for which I have bought it.
The confused companion asked the price for what he has bought the well to which Uthman (رضي الله عنه) replied Allah promised to reward him 10 times for helping people.
What are Plans for the Uthman (رضي الله عنه) well?
From 1400 years ago till now the well is left open for all the people to come to visit and fetch fresh water from it. The authorities are planning to build further development across the well.
What are the Remarks of the Researcher of Madinah?
Abdullah Kabeer is a scientific researcher in Madinah told Saudi Press Agency that this well is the only existing and flowing well in Madinah since the Prophet’s time. He further said that the authorities are planning to name the area as, “Uthman Well” to recognize the historical value and importance for the Muslims.
